The 3 Things You Need To Get THAT Job!

So you're about to apply for a job, for various reasons; but you're hopeful that you will get invited to an interview with the organization. The biggest value you should add to any organization is being THE answer to the employers problems.

If you think logically; the company is hiring not just to fill a position, but they're seeking someone to come into that position and solve the problem/s they are facing, hence the reason they are searching for someone to fill the gap.

This blog will help you to understand:

  1. The reason why you need to sell yourself

  2. What employers are looking for

  3. How to answer the "why should I hire you?" question

Honestly though, this will take some reflective soul searching to prove yourself as the answer to the organization's needs. It may be a little uncomfortable at first, as you learn a little more about yourself, but I promise you, it will be rewarding and will give you a well needed confidence boost!

So, read on...

1. The Reason Why You Need To Sell Yourself

So here's the reason why you need to sell yourself; your resume is your marketing material, you are the product and the employer is the potential customer who will buy into your 'product'... YOU! Therefore you need to make sure that your 'brand' portrays you in the right light.

Same as you would evaluate a stereo set, or a BBQ grill before your make your purchase... right!? You check the specifications, the features, the functionality, the capacity and whether it will fit with your current color scheme and decor (well...some of us do).

These are the same measures employers and hiring managers take when comparing resumes.

They evaluate your credentials, your uniqueness or what you can offer the organization, your drive (or lack of) and whether you'll fit into the organization's culture.

I wrote about how you can sell yourself on your resume in an earlier blog titled, "Yes! Flaunt It On Your Resume", check it out for more indepth information on why you need to really showcase what you have to offer.

I hope that has sparked an urgency to re-visit your resume, and for some... I see a lightbulb going off in your head! I love it! I offer free resume assessments, so why not get a professional second pair of eyes on your resume?

2. What Are Employers Looking For?

Most of us ask ourselves what are employers looking for? Sometimes with frustration, other times with sincere curiosity and interest and more often than not, with anger; especially after yet another unsuccessful interview.

What I've found however; is that this question isn't hard at all. Yes of course every organization is different and unique in many ways, but the underlying purpose and motivation for employers is simple.

As long as you can illustrate this key point, not just on your resume, but also reflective on your cover letter as well AND in the interview... definitely in the interview.

You WILL be hired!

"How can you solve my problem?"

3. Why Should I Hire You?

The "why should I hire you?" question can be daunting for some, and may cause anxiety for others; but you don't have to feel that way.

This question is an opportunity for you to be memorable in the employer's mind, and to stand out and drive home your selling points and ultimately close the 'sale'.

Mind you, you don't have to be in 'sales' to effectively sell your best qualities and assets.

Here is where you remind the employers of the reasons you stand out, fit into the organization culture and how you can solve their problem.

  • Speak with confidence and assertiveness.

  • Relay 4-5 reasons why you're the best fit.

  • Do your research and have these prepared prior to the interview.

  • Don't forget to smile!

Preparation is key in building confidence, creating ease, and to reduce nerves. So if you're serious about getting this job... #StaySerious and do your research, prepare, and practice.

Don't Forget,
