Would you agree that it's relatively harder to get a job today than it was in 1963? Hmmm... What do you think are some of the factors that make it harder to get a job today than in 1963?
You May Say:
- Lack of new markets being introduced - Factory workers being replaced by robots - Living expenses increasing - Lack of adequate skilled workers - On and on and on
We can choose to point fingers at any one or multiple factor/s, to ease and minimize the guilt you feel inside. Regardless of the effort placed on magnifying an external force, the 'problem' still remains, i.e. it's hard to get a job. Now, we could do a number of things to tackle this 'problem':
1. Continue to blame external forces 2. Seek professional help 3. Fix it myself 4. Do nothing << That's always an option
Even though I am a professional in this area and field, and love helping my clients to highlight their unique contribution to any organization. The option I'll focus on today is 'fix it myself', why? I believe in self-empowerment.
Have you ever heard this saying:

That's why I do what I do!
So I bet you’re asking. How do I fix-it myself?
There's only one thing you need to do, to stand 10 times above the competition. This one thing though, most people don't like to do it, most people down play it and most people think it's not right.
The BIG secret?
Bragging. Yes! Bragging...
You: "But Kim, only narcissists do that" Me: "True, but if it's done the right way, it brings out your competitive advantage, and I'm showing you how to do it the right way! So pay attention"
The bragging I'm referring to does not mean to exaggerate your results, numbers or achievements. The bragging I'm talking about is factual and backed by your supervisor.
Can I ask you a question? How do you keep track of your accomplishments and individual contribution for each role you've had since leaving school?
> Keeping the job description from each position? > Using the role and responsibilities sheet you received when you started the position? > Using your performance agreement to track what you've accomplished? > Using your 'Brag Log'? <<< A what?!
I'm sorry, I'm moving a little too fast; here's the definition of a 'brag log'.
"A log sheet created to track how valuable you are to the company"
aka your 'Awesome Sheet’.
The log is where you'll track all the great, innovative, different, powerful, resourceful, efficiency building changes you've introduced, initiated etc within the organization.
This can be done in a spreadsheet, a journal, binder, however way you want to track the contributions you made to the organization.
I'll walk you through the steps to setting up your brag log, so you can start populating the fields. The next time your applying for a job, it will be easier for you to 'show' not tell, how you add value to the organization.
Steps To Creating A Brag-Log:
Step 1: Chose the mode of tracking, i.e. spreadsheet / journal / binder etc Step 2: Create columns or categories to track your awesomeness (see example below) Step 3: Start populating the fields with what you did! Step 4: Update it each time you accomplish something at work and in your career Step 5: #StaySerious!
Here's an example of a basic tracker:

You can add or customize it for your own use and relevance, have fun with it, take a step back and look how awesome you are! I would love to see your 'brag log'!
